The Solution
The Shore Group and Kier partnered with DataScope to utilise an integrated suite of software to:
- Support onsite deliveries and logistics
- Induct and manage the workforce
- Control access on and off site and welfare areas
- Co-ordinate daily activity and logistics movements on site
- Capture and report on CO2 data
Managing a Busy Site
With the logistics challenges that come with a city centre project, space at a real premium, and a high number of material deliveries, it was important that the flow of deliveries to site was controlled.
The project uses DataScope’s Delivery Management system for all material delivery bookings which are controlled and managed by Dai Bates-Moss, Logistics Manager for The Shore Group:
“Any deliveries booked in have to be reviewed and approved by me. It’s important that we keep traffic flowing, and we have achieved that by consistently using DataScope. By using the Delivery Management System, we make sure suppliers and contractors stick to their times. As soon as a delivery comes in, I want to be offloading and lifting it.”
DAI BATES-MOSS, LOGISTICS MANAGER, THE SHORE GROUP
With all deliveries being booked and managed through the DMS, the logistics team have been able to effectively manage the finite space available and utilise resources effectively. The team also gained real time visibility of all deliveries as well as being able to monitor and report on CO2 data for both vehicles and the workforce.
“The system allows me to manage a busy/tight site. I’ve used this for deliveries, resource allocation and CO2 capturing for all aspects. Alongside the turnstile/induction usage. Brilliant software and easy company to deal with.
Plan Ahead for the Week Ahead
As well as using DataScope’s logistics and workforce software, the team have recently implemented DataTouch to help transform short-term planning across all trades as well as the way DABs meetings are run.
Previously using a white board for DABs, DataTouch was installed earlier this year to help drive better planning and save time.
Subcontractors use DataTouch’s interactive site drawings to plan their activities up to two weeks in advance where possible. This has allowed them to spot potential issues and clashes early, discuss and resolve them. If anything is missed, it can be updated in DataTouch live in the DABs meeting.
Previously this was a manual exercise which meant that recording and planning for any activities in advance was challenging.
With everyone prepared ahead of time, The DABs meetings have been transformed into a more focused, collaborative session. This has not only saved time for Kier, but also positively impacts the subcontractors every day.
“Before DataTouch, we required someone to record and scan notes and manually email them out after every meeting. Now DataTouch allows us to instantly send this information at the end of the meeting, and saves us on average 20 minutes every day. More importantly, it allows us to plan works in advance – starts important conversations early where two contactors may need to work in the same area.”
Jayson Mansell, Site Manager – Kier Construction
Efficiency does not just stop at report generation. With trades now preparing in advance, the average DABs meeting takes 25% less time, and promotes proactive discussion about potential pinch points.
Bringing it all together
With DataTouch also linking directly with DataScope’s Logistics and Workforce systems, it also allows the logistics manager to update and report on upcoming deliveries during the meeting as well as assign labour to work tasks.
